One of my favorite explanations of how DNA affects our lives—and how it can be shifted—comes from The DNA of Healing: A Five Step Process for Total Wellness and Abundance by Margaret Ruby.
Here are some of the key insights, along with my reflections:
1. DNA Is Not Fixed
Many people believe DNA is an unchangeable code. But research shows otherwise.
Our DNA responds daily to our thoughts, emotions, and environment. Stress, trauma, or unresolved emotional pain can damage DNA and affect how our cells function. Scientists have even compared the DNA of stressed individuals with control groups and found measurable differences.
On the other hand, positive thoughts and focused intention can heal DNA. In one experiment, a DNA sample unwound into a healthy state for cell division when positive energy was directed toward it—even though the person sending the intention was half a mile away.
2. DNA Shapes Personality and Emotion
DNA influences far more than physical traits. It also affects emotions, attitudes, and behaviors.
For example, researchers in Barcelona discovered that a mutation on chromosome 15 increases susceptibility to panic attacks and anxiety disorders. This shows that some psychological patterns are rooted not in personal weakness but in genetics.
3. DNA Carries Ancestral Patterns
We inherit more than physical traits from our ancestors. DNA also carries attitudes, beliefs, and emotional imprints.
This means a fear or limitation you struggle with today may trace back generations. The trauma of an ancestor—say, a grandmother who drowned—could mutate family DNA, leaving descendants with a fear of water even if they’ve never had such an experience themselves.
4. Genes Switch On and Off
Not every gene you inherit is active. Genes switch on or off depending on life experiences and emotional states.
Trauma, for example, can awaken ancestral memories embedded in DNA, bringing forward new traits or illnesses. Genetic researcher Dan Winterton suggests that emotions create waveforms that interact with the DNA helix, activating or deactivating genes. This helps explain why siblings can have such different personalities and health challenges despite shared ancestry.

5. DNA Can Be Repatterned
Ruby teaches that we can reset our genetic codes with healing techniques. This often involves:
Identifying where in your ancestral line a limiting belief or trauma originated,
Releasing that belief, and
Replacing it with a new, supportive pattern.
In other words, DNA is not static. It responds to energy, intention, and conscious healing. Energy healing practices, combined with positive choices and new habits, can help re-pattern deeply embedded ancestral influences.
While healing is one application, DNA work may also awaken dormant genes linked to abilities we currently consider “supernormal”—expanded creativity, multi-dimensional awareness, and more.
More on this, perhaps, in a future post.
